1. Prepare hole with depth and width as illustrated. Carefully measure ball before setting into hole.

2. Set plant into hole. D​ON’T ​handle plant by top. D​O handle by ball only.

3. Backfill ½ of the way

4. Stake Tree (see diagram to the right)

5. Remove ⅔ of wire. also remove burlap and string from top and away from the trunk.

6. When hole in backfilled halfway, water by pushing hose into the loose soil mix. Allow the water to fully saturate the backfill.

7. After water has settled this backfill, finish backfilling the hole to ground level and water this new backfill as before.

8. When the backfill is fully watered in and the soil is settled, set your hose on top of the original root ball and water with a very slow stream of water. CAUTION: S​od should be left away from the backfill area. DON’T: ​use edging around tree DON’T: Plant flowers on top of root ball.

Special Planting Conditions: Planting on Sloped or Berms

1. Form a soil ring. Use this method only in areas not covered by normal lawn watering, such as slopes or berms.

2. In areas where water tends to collect, slope soil away from trunk to shed water. This is especially important on certain varieties such as pines, birch, mountain ash, maples, lindens, oaks cherries, and hackberry.

3. Where aggregate, crushed stone or other mulch is desired around plantings, use normal planting procedures, then remove 2 inches of soil and fill to ground level with material desired.

4. Do not fertilize until 2nd growing season.
